Afternoon Tea At Disney's Grand Floridian Resort

To celebrate my recent birthday we decided to do something a little bit special when we were in Orlando last month. We racked our brains for a girly activity that we could share and decided on Afternoon Tea in the Garden Room at the Grand Floridian Hotel, Disneyworld. This was something that Mimi had already experienced when she was working in Orlando a couple of years ago but for me it was a brand new experience and I couldn't wait!

We packed the husbands off for the day and put on our glad rags for a fancy afternoon of tea, scones and cake! We spent some time before our reservation in the grounds of the resort walking in the beautiful sunshine and enjoying the scenery. We also took advantage of the lovely lobby of the Grand Floridian where we enjoyed the musicians who play from the gallery as we relaxed in their extremely comfortable couches!

We were welcomed and shown to our table as soon as we arrived at the Garden Room where we had a beautiful view of the grounds from our seats. Our excellent server explained the menu and tea options and we settled on the Cheshire Tea option that included the following:

Selection of Fruits and Imported Cheeses

Medley of Finger Sandwiches:
Tantalizing Cucumber . Sweet Curry Chicken . Traditional Egg Salad . Fire Roasted Tomato with Oregano Goat Cheese

Traditional Scone with Accompaniments:
Buttery Golden Raisin Scone with Devonshire Clotted Cream, Lemon Curd and Apricot Jam . Served with a Strawberry Preserve Tart

Choice of Desserts:
Delicate House-Made Pastries with Mousse Filled Swan . French Macaroon and a Chocolate Covered Strawberry
Freshly Cut Strawberries topped with Hand Whipped Creme
Seasonal English Trifle with layers of Lady Fingers, Chantilly, Seasonal Fruit and Hand Whipped Cream

Your Choice of Tea

The afternoon tea option that we selected was $50 per guest with the option to add a glass of champagne for an additional $15 each.

My main gripe with afternoon tea is that you get too many sweet treats and not enough savoury, however, the cheese course and sandwiches definitely balanced out the sweet goodies that were to come! The selection of cheeses was very tasty and we thoroughly enjoyed them along with the fruits (we are big cheese eaters in our family!).

The sandwiches were next and consisted of cucumber, goat cheese and tomato and egg. As I am not a lover of cucumber I substituted the cucumber for another goat cheese and tomato sandwich. The server was more than happy to grant any substitution request that we made.

Next for the sweets! They were served on a beautiful cake tower and so that we got to taste most of the desserts on offer I ordered the pastries selection and Mimi ordered the trifle. The famous mousse filled swan was amazing! The mousse filling was light and delicious and the choux pastry was perfectly baked. We halved it along with the macaroon and the jam tart. The trifle was HUGE and although it looked very heavy it was actually quite light and we just about managed to polish it all off! All of the pastries were a delicious end to the meal.

We had a fabulous afternoon at the Grand Floridian and would definitely recommend afternoon tea if you are seeking a bit of a girlie treat while in Orlando. Yes, $50 a head is quite steep but to us it was worth it for the whole experience and while we won't be rushing back tomorrow we would certainly do it again in the future. The surroundings and service were amazing and made the $50 price tag worth the splurge.
